The Australian Government will begin discussions with China next week on an agreement that will allow uranium to be exported for China’s nuclear power industry.

Prime Minister John Howard says a safeguards agreement, ensuring the uranium will be used only for peaceful purposes, is necessary before any exports can go ahead.

Mr Howard says it will be up to China then to pursue the matter.

The question of whether there are any exports and so forth that go ahead well that ultimately is a commercial matter, involving companies and involving utilities in china but a government’s point of view we are quite determined that there be proper safeguards and we’re having discussions with the chinese about that.
