West slams Iran nuclear moves
Western officials sharply criticized Iran Tuesday after it removed U.N. seals from at least one nuclear facility and resumed research work.
“Nuclear research officially resumed at sites agreed upon with (U.N.) inspectors,” said Mohammad Saeedi, deputy head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization.
Saeedi said Iran was not resuming the production of nuclear fuel, a process that would involve uranium enrichment.
“We differentiate nuclear fuel production with research and access to technology. Suspension of nuclear fuel production will be continued in the country.”
But British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw said there was no good reason for Iran to restart its research if it truly only wants a nuclear program for peaceful means.
“We are profoundly concerned that Iran has decided to re-start research and development activities relating to uranium enrichment,” Straw said in a statement.
“There was no good reason why Iran should have taken this step if its intentions are truly peaceful and it wanted to resolve long standing international concerns.”
