The US Army said it will begin proceedings to discharge reservists who have failed to report to duty after being mobilized for Iraq and Afghanistan.

The action signals a tougher approach by the army which had encouraged reservists to apply for exemptions or delays of their mobilization after hundreds of reservists initially failed to report for duty in 2004.

The army said it will begin proceedings to discharge about 80 reservists who either failed to report to duty after receiving a mobilization order or who could not be reached by the army.

The 80 were among 7,200 reservists called up from a rarely mobilized pool of former soldiers called the Individual Ready Reserve to fill vacant slots in national guard and reserve units deploying to Iraq and Afghanistan.
