Rescuers are preparing to use a mine safety robot to assist in their search for 13 trapped coal miners.

Ben Hatfield of says the robot will be used to move into the area of the mine where the miners are believed to be trapped.

He says this will speed up the process, because the robot won’t have to slow down if it encounters contaminated air. It will check the air for increased levels of carbon monoxide so human rescuers will know what they face.

Rescuers have reported elevated carbon monoxide levels in the mine but say the air at 92-hundred feet is still breathable.
