Norway gets soft drinks eco-tax
Norway has slapped a tax on milk and juice cartons in a drive to persuade producers and consumers to increase recycling of rubbish.
The government says the tax will be removed once recycling reaches 95%. Opponents of the tax say that Norway’s recycling rate is already one of the best in the world, at more than 60%.
The extra tax will cost a typical family with young children about 450 kroner ($66; £39) a year, welfare groups say.
Critics point out that people who are meticulous about recycling will have to pay the tax along with everyone else.
“Making milk more expensive isn’t going to get more people recycling cartons,” said consumer expert Trond Blindheim, quoted by the Aftenposten newspaper.
