British Honours Awarded
The British honours list has come out for 2005, and among the honourees are the following:
- The singer Tom Jones gets a knighthood (finally!)
- Television presenter, Bruce Forsyth, becomes a CBE.
- The English cricket team: Michael Vaughan, the captain, and Duncan Fletcher, the coach, received OBEs, while the rest of the team, including Andrew Flintoff and Kevin Pietersen, received MBEs.
- Sebastian Coe (already a Lord) has been made a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire (KBE).
- Sir Richard Mottram, Downing Street’s intelligence and security chief, is made GBE of the Order of Bath.
- Lord Ashdown – until recently the UN’s High Representative in Bosnia – has become Knight Grand Cross (GBE) of the Order of St Michael and Saint George.
- Vivienne Westwood, who is made a dame.
- Robbie Coltrane and Imelda Staunton become OBEs.
- Apple iPod designer Jonathan Ive becomes a CBE.
- Russell Square Tube station supervisor David Boyce, who ran into the tunnel to provide first aid to victims of the bombing, is made an MBE.
- Off-duty Tube driver John Boyle, who entered Aldgate Tube station to rescue victims, is also appointed an MBE.
- Playwright Arnold Wesker and jazz musician John Dankworth are also knighted, while former BBC Radio head Liz Forgan is made a Dame.
- The Beverley Sisters, who were the first UK female group to break into the US top 10 charts, are all appointed MBEs.
