Indian Terrorist Attack in Bangalore
In the first such attack on the southern city, a gunman burst into the high-prestige Indian Institute of Science as a conference on infrastructure development ended and fired into the crowd of participants as they left. A second assailant lobbed grenades. Prof. M.C. Puri of the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, was fatally wounded.
The gunmen arrived in a car and fled the scene under cover of dark. Indian police report at least two assailants were involved and are convinced it was a terrorist attack. An Ak-56 rifle, four grenades – one live, and three empty magazines were recovered.
The attack occurred hours after the mobster Abu Salem, extradited from Portugal last month, was brought to Bangalore for a lie detection test. A tie-in between his gang and al Qaeda-linked Lashker e-Toyyba Kashmiri terrorists has emerged in the investigations of the 1993 Mumbai terrorist attack which left 250 dead and the New Delhi market bombings on Oct. 29, in which 65 people were killed. An interior ministry emergency meeting was called in New Delhi.
On Nov. 18, DEBKA-Net-Weekly electronic newsletter 230 revealed Abu Salem’s deep-seated ties to both al Qaeda and Bollywood.
