Young Joseph Rains almost quit his job as a paperboy in Grand Island, N.Y., but his decision to stick with it may have saved an elderly woman’s life.

The 12-year-old was delivering The Buffalo News to the woman’s home Monday when he noticed the previous day’s paper was untouched. The seventh-grader went to a side door, where he heard screaming and banging. The 81-year-old woman was using a broomstick to hit the door to get his attention.

Joseph’s mother was driving him around on his deliveries, and they alerted authorities. Emergency crews quickly arrived to find the woman wedged between a rear stairwell and the door. Authorities said she had fallen two days earlier, on Christmas Eve. She’s being treated for weakness and dehydration.

Fire officials said the boy’s actions helped save her life.
