Town considers fining underage smokers
One North Country village is thinking about fining underage smokers. State law bans minors from buying cigarettes, but not from smoking them.
The Saint Lawrence County Tobacco Free Coalition has taken a proposal to fine smokers under age 18 to the village of Canton’s board of trustees.
Now the board says it wants to get community feedback. Supporters say they know the proposal could be controversial.
According to the American Lung Association, about 90 percent of smokers take up the habit before age 21.
A public hearing on the proposal is planned for January 23rd.
Canton is 120 miles north of Syracuse.
