Criminal case against Yulia Tymoshenko dropped
Russian prosecutors said Monday they dropped a criminal case against former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko because the statute of limitations had expired on corruption charges against her.
Tymoshenko had been accused of bribing Russian defense officials while she headed Ukraine’s main gas distributor, the now-defunct United Energy Systems in the mid-1990s. Tymoshenko has denied the charges, saying they were politically motivated.
Tymoshenko had frosty ties with Russia and never visited while in office. She met with Russian prosecutors in Moscow in September, however, and the international arrest warrant against her was dropped.
Tymoshenko, who was fired as prime minister of her ex-Soviet nation on Sept. 8, has apparently moved to mend fences with Russia, which still wields considerable influence in neighboring Ukraine.
Her party is a top contender in the upcoming March parliamentary elections, which she hopes will enable her to regain her job as prime minister.
