Bolivian President-Elect Gets Ready for Power
The socialist president-elect of Bolivia, Evo Morales, has met the outgoing President, Eduardo Rodriguez, to plan the transition of power.
Fellow presidents and leaders of social movements are to be invited to his inauguration, to be held on 22 January. It will be followed by a large rally in the country’s main city, La Paz.
Mr Morales, an Aymara Indian, says one of his priorities will be to rewrite the constitution to include more rights for Bolivia’s indigenous majority.
Mr Morales has also made it clear that he does not want to stop the launch of an international bidding process to develop a huge iron mine in Puerto Suarez, near the Brazilian border.
The president-elect, who arrived at the presidential palace for talks in a leather jacket and open-necked shirt, has said Bolivia needs to seek investment.
Mr Rodriguez suspended the bidding process as a courtesy to his successor, leading to complaints from business interests.
