Saddam Claims He’s Been Tortured by Americans
Saddam Hussein yesterday accused his American guards of beating him, after his trial heard some of the strongest evidence yet linking the former Iraqi president and his co-defendants to alleged torture.
Saddam sat quietly for most of the day’s proceedings as a witness testified that his deposed regime killed and tortured people by administering electric shocks and ripping off their skin after pouring molten plastic on it. Another witness told how he was tortured while Saddam’s half-brother sat nearby eating grapes.
Toward the end of the hearing, Saddam launched into a rant alleging that he had been tortured by US troops. “I want to say here, yes, we have been beaten by the Americans and we have been tortured,” Saddam responded, before gesturing towards his seven co-defendants, “one by one”. “Yes I have been beaten, everywhere on my body. The marks are still there.”
The former dictator did not say who allegedly beat him and he added: “I’m not complaining about the Americans because I can poke their eyes with my own hands.”
The chief prosecutor said that if the claim was true, Saddam would be transferred into the custody of Iraqi troops. He ordered an investigation.
