Pirro drops bid to defeat Sen. Clinton
After weeks of pressure from state GOP leaders, Republican Jeanine Pirro on Wednesday abandoned her campaign to unseat Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y.
“I have decided that my law enforcement background better qualifies me for a race for New York State attorney general than a race for the United States Senate,” the Westchester County district attorney said.
Independent polls show Clinton, a potential 2008 presidential contender, maintaining huge leads over Pirro and other potential GOP challengers. Pirro’s withdrawal leaves Republicans with two active candidates to oppose Clinton: former Yonkers Mayor John Spencer, who is not well known statewide, and an even less well known tax attorney from the Catskills region, William Brenner.
