King Kong was expected to rake in about $75 million in theaters over the weekend, so box office monitors were surprised and Universal Pictures executives were disappointed to see that it only brought in about $50 million, with Friday being especially slow. On Saturday, however, there was a 40% increase, indicating that many were seeing it based on recommendations of those who had seen it on Friday.

Maybe people are reluctant to see it because it’s 3 hours long. Director Peter Jackson had a little trouble getting Universal Pictures to agree with the length of the film, but eventually they did, which resulted in King Kong going over budget by millions. The final cost of the film was $207 million.

Universal execs say they are still optimistic, despite the slow start, for box office success.
