Supreme Court ponders Republican candidate’s eligibility
With a special election just a week away, the Minnesota Supreme Court pondered today whether to disqualify a state House candidate from running in St. Cloud, Minnesota.
A lower court judge found on Friday that the Republican candidate, Sue Ek, hasn’t lived in St. Cloud long enough to qualify for the election. The state constitution requires candidates to live in a district for at least six months before an election.
That translates into a June 27 deadline for the Dec. 27 special election. But on July 9, Ek signed an affidavit in St. Paul saying she lived in a house there owned by her parents.
Ek said the document was confusing and she didn’t read it closely. She said she signed it so she could continue to operate a natural family planning organization from the property as a home business, after neighbors objected to the number of visitors to the house
