WTO Protestors Clash with Police
Police fired tear gas at hundreds of protesters who tried to besiege a convention center where the World Trade Organization was meeting Saturday in Hong Kong.
Security forces locked all the doors to the WTO venue, and dozens of police were stationed in key areas inside the building as trade ministers from around the world were negotiating.
Clouds of tear gas wafted through the air in the area close to downtown Hong Kong, and protesters quickly scattered after police began firing the gas. They regrouped later and continued beating drums and chanting.
Police used the tear gas just minutes after Secretary for Security Ambrose Lee went on television and warned the public to stay away from the protest area.
“The police will take ruthless actions to dispel these illegal actions,” Lee warned.
