Iraqi group says voters were threatened
The National Iraqi list, the election bloc headed by former Prime Minister Iyad Allawi, accused other groups Saturday of intimidating voters.
Mehdi al-Hafeth, a National Iraqi spokesman, said his group might demand an international investigation of the election. At a news conference in Baghdad, he said that the worst instances of threats against voters occurred in the heavily Shiite south of the country.
Though al-Hafeth did not name those allegedly conducting the intimidation, sources inside the group said it believed Iran had been trying to tilt the outcome toward religious Shiite candidates.
Iraqis Thursday voted for a new 275-seat National Assembly. The final outcome of the election is not expected to be known for days or weeks and putting together a government could take weeks more.
