US Beef Ships to Japan after Ban Eases
The first shipment of US beef in nearly two years has arrived in Japan after the easing of an import ban put in place amid concerns about mad cow disease.
Officials say inspectors plan to check the shipment of more than four tons of beef to see that it meets government safety guidelines.
Japan slapped a ban on imports of American beef in December 2003 after the first case of mad cow disease was reported in the US. After two years of negotiations, Tokyo opened its doors Monday to meat from US cows younger than 21 months.
Japan agreed to allow imports of meat from cattle younger than 21 months because no cases of mad cow disease have been found in cows that age.
