10 UK Oil Fires Extinguished
Ten out of 20 oil tank fires at the Buncefield depot have been extinguished, Hertfordshire fire service said at midday.
The huge operation to smother the fires using 32,000 litres of water a minute and 250,000 litres of foam began this morning.
A fire service spokeswoman said the number of fires already extinguished showed the foam concentrate was effective, but added that the next hour was “critical”.
The blaze, the biggest industrial fire in peacetime Europe, yesterday sent a plume of toxic black smoke into the sky after more than 20 fuel tanks exploded early yesterday.
