Pinochet Under House Arrest
Accused of tax evasion and corruption, Former Chilean dictator, Augusto Pinochet, was indicted and put under house arrest today. This is the first time the Pinochet has been indicted for charges not related to human rights abuses during his rule.
Pinochet’s former convictions for human rights abuses have been blocked on health grounds, but doctors appointed by the courts have concurred that he is fit to stand trial.
The charges brought against the 90 year old ex-dictator of Chile include tax evasion, use of a false passport, submission of false government documents to a bank and the filing of a false report concerning his personal assets.
