Britain to Allow 24-Hour a Day Alcohol Sales
Last call for last call. A law that goes into effect in England and Wales Wednesday tonight allows pubs and other establishments to apply to stay open round-the-clock.
The government says the change should ease the problem of late-night drunks staggering around because pub patrons won’t feel obligated to hoist a few before closing time.
But the head of the British Association for Emergency Medicine says he’s afraid the longer hours are going to lead people to drink more.
Up to now, British pubs have had to shut down Monday through Saturday at 11 pm and a half hour earlier on Sundays.
