US Military Completes Body Burning Probe
A US military inquiry into television footage purportedly showing American troops burning the bodies of two dead Taleban fighters has been completed and will be released soon, a US spokesman said on Monday.
Cremation of corpses is banned under Islam, and the Afghan government demanded that those responsible be punished. Islamic clerics condemned the act.
The US military launched an inquiry into the alleged desecration, which was recorded on video last month by a freelance journalist embedded with the US troops in volatile southern Afghanistan.
“This report has been completed,” US military spokesman Col. James Yonts told reporters. “It is in the final process right now and we expect those results to come out soon.”
A separate probe by the Afghan Defense Ministry has also been completed and its conclusions will also be released soon, he said.
