European Union To Investigate Secret CIA Prisons
The European Union’s watchdog agency, the European Commission, says it’s going to talk informally with the governments of the EU’s 25 members about reports that the CIA set up secret prisons in Eastern Europe.
A European Union spokesman says such prisons could violate EU human rights laws.
The Commission will look into the claims because it is the agency that ensures European Union rules are properly followed.
U.S. officials refuse to confirm or deny a Washington Post report that the CIA has been hiding and interrogating some of its top al-Qaeda captive suspects at a Soviet-era compound in Eastern Europe.
