Japan to host US nuclear carrier
Japan will break its postwar nuclear taboo by allowing the US Navy to station a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier in one of its ports in a move that is likely to trigger fierce domestic controversy.
The US navy said in a statement that the USS Kitty Hawk, currently stationed in Yokosuka, in Kanagawa prefecture near Tokyo, would be decommissioned and replaced with a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier.
“One of the nine Nimitz-class aircraft carriers will replace the USS Kitty Hawk as the forward deployed carrier in the Western Pacific, and will arrive in Yokosuka, Japan in 2008,†it said.
