Afghan drug kingpin extradited to New York
An Afghan identified as one of the world’s top drug kingpins was extradited to New York for prosecution Monday on charges he imported hundreds of kilograms of heroin into the United States, law enforcement officials said.
Baz Mohammad and a codefendant were brought to New York on Monday in a “historic” extradition, the first time an Afghan has been brought to the country for prosecution for importing heroin, said Manhattan US Attorney Michael Garcia. He said Baz Mohammad once told one co-conspirator that selling heroin in the US “was a jihad because they were taking the Americans’ money and the heroin was killing them.”
Persecutors accused Mohammad’s organization of possessing more than 1.4-million-dollar worth of heroin that was ultimately seized in this country. The indictment describes a host of seizures dating back more than a decade including: a seizure at JFK International Airport in 1991; a seizure in Dulles in 1991 and a seizure at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport. Drugs were allegedly smuggledin in clothing and in suitcases.
