Pope Benedict Forbids Married Priests

Catholic bishops say the Church is suffering from a worldwide shortage of priests, but say allowing marriage is not the answer.

Instead, the 250 prelates meeting in the , reaffirmed the principle of celibacy within the clergy. They also called on lawmakers to protect marriage and the family, and outlaw abortion and euthanasia.

Speaking from a personal point of view, I am curious how the Church can continue to relate to modern society’s problems if they don’t take part in modern society. How can a priest help/aid/lecture a married person or couple of marriage if they have no comprehension of marriage?

Not only that but the Catholic Church already has married priests. Granted, those are priests that converted from other orders of Christianity and had wives, but still, they are married and by all accounts are excellent priests.

I think that the Church is denying this because it opens the door wider for women priests. If a priest is married for example, then his wife would know a lot more about being a priests than say, the average Catholic woman on the street (and no I don’t mean street-walkers who happen to be Catholic ;) ).

In the earliest days of the Catholic Church there were female priests, and it has been postulated that they were the nucleus for a form of “family” of Christians. It is widely acknowledged that women are nurturing and more understanding of emotional issues than men, but it seems that the male hierarchy of the Church is stuck in the 12th century. A pity for Catholics the world over.
