Bombers Kill 14 in Iraq
A suicide car bomber killed 14 people and wounded 42 outside a mosque in Hilla, south of Baghdad, on Wednesday as Shi’ite worshippers were gathering for the start of the holy month of Ramadan, police said.
People were crowding round the entrance to the mosque when the car drove up and exploded, one senior police officer said. Of the wounded, six were in a critical condition.
Iraqi and U.S. officials have voiced fears of an increase in violence ahead of the October 15 referendum on a new constitution, which Sunni Arab insurgents have vowed to wreck.
