Nine fraud charges for theft of Katrina funds
Nine people are being charged with wire fraud after stealing at least $25,000 from a Red Cross call-center that was set up for Katrina relief in Bakersfield, California. Eight people have been arrested, and a ninth defendant is being looked for.
The nine worked as operators at the call-center, providing qualifying victims with a personal identification number that they would then present to Western Union to receive funds. The operators would then call their friends and give them pin numbers, sometimes right after giving a Hurricane Katrina victim the same pin number.
