Mission-Creep of DNA Collection
Is it a sign of the times or just over-enthusiastic federalists, that a bill is now in the Senate that allows the Federal government to keep DNA from anyone who is arrested. Going beyond what is currently required, where DNA is collected only for those convicted of a crime, is this a heavy assault on the rights and privacy of citizens?
Or, should we look at it from the point of view of the law enforcement, where many of those caught and convicted of crimes have been found to have been arrested previously. Are they simply extending that thought process, to make it easier to find people suspected of crimes?
While it may be time to worry, if you have been arrested but not convicted, there is a recourse, you can petition that your DNA be destroyed and removed from the database once your case is resolved.
The bill is sponsored by Sen. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) and Sen. John Cornyn (R-Tex.).
