Hurricane Rita bears down on Texas
Hurricane Rita entered the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico and quickly intensified into a category 4 storm on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane scale. Rita appears to be bearing down on the central Gulf coast of Texas. Thirteen of fourteen current strike probability forecasts show that the storm will most likely spare Louisiana.
It does appear that Rita will make landfall somewhere on the Texas coast on Friday or Saturday. If you live in those areas, please begin your preparations for evacuation immediately. Forecasters say that Rita could become even stronger as it churns across the gulf.
The National Hurricane Center has prepared a disaster supply kit. All Gulf coast residents should seriously consider making these kits in light of the massive suffering in the wake of Katrina.
