World’s first face transplant
Dr. Maria Siemionow of the Cleveland Clinic is going to examine and interview, in the next several weeks, seven women and five men who all hope to be the first in the world to receive a face transplant. Dr. Siemionow will ask questions such as what they hope to gain, what they most fear, and if they’re afraid to look like another person, but they’ve already lost their facial identity due to burns or other disfigurements.
Hosptials in France and England have already considered and scrapped plans of face transplants because of the fear of the body rejecting the new face, leaving the patient with nothing. The risks for this procedure are so high and unknown, the consent form states that doctors don’t think informed consent is even possible.
