Germany is in a state of chaos after their national elections ended with both chancellor Gerhard Schröder and Angela Merkel claiming victory. The Bundestag (German Parliament) is also deadlocked.

While we have become accustomed to tight political races here in America, this is a first for post-war Germany. Chancellor Gerhard Schröder was a major underdog according to national polling just a week ago. While his comeback is quite impressive, it may have fallen short, Angela Merkel is likely to walk away as the victor and become Germany’s first female Chancellor. If Ms. Merkel is declared the winner, she will have a slew of challenges facing her including dealing with the Socialist Democratic Party which is lead by none other than Gerhard Schröder. The SPD will be a major force to be reckoned with in German politics and if Ms. Merkel is declared the victor, she will have to find a way to work with them on tough issues such as record unemployment, holding together the fragile European Union and repairing relations with the United States.

In America, conservatives would be delighted if Chancellor Schröder went down to defeat. Many Republicans believe that he and French President Jacques Chirac took Iraqi oil in exchange for their opposition to the war in Iraq.
