China Expanding Hydro-Plants
In aggressive moves aimed to cut its dependance on oil and coal, China is planning on increasing the amount of hydro-power plants on the upper parts of the Yangtze river. The China Three Gorges Project Corp (CTGPC) said this will happen within the next 15 years.
Currently two hydro-plants are in operation along the river, at the Three Gorges Dam, with a combined capacity of 12.5 GW (gigawatts). When all the plants are in operation, capacity is expected to be 63.6 GW (gigawatts).
CTGPC plans to build the four new hydro-plants at Xiluodu, Xiangjiaba, Baiheban, Wudongde – four places along the Jinsha river on the upper parts of the Yangtze river.
