Congress approves $51.8 billion
Upon the request of President Bush, congress approved $51.8 billion Thursday to be spent on Hurricane Katrina Relief, with the votes being 411-10 in the House and 97-0 in the Senate. This brings the total from the government to $62 billion, making it the most spent on any previous domestic natural disaster to date.
Some think it’s a bad move because of what it will do to the national deficit, but Bush plans for the government to compensate states caring for Katrina victims, and said “You should not be penalized for showing compassion.”
