Iraq’s al Qaeda said on Tuesday it was behind a failed rocket attack on U.S. Navy ships in Jordan’s Red Sea port of Aqaba. The group, led by Jordanian militant Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, said that they delayed claiming the attack so that their brothers could complete their withdrawal and flee to safety.

The rockets were fired at a group of ships belonging to US forces. One rocket narrowly missed a US warship docked in the harbour but killed a Jordanian soldier, a second hit a military hospital in Aqaba, and a third landed in the Israeli town of Eilat.
