Panhandling banned in Atlanta
Against the protests of homeless people and others, a city ordinace was passed in Atlanta that makes begging for money in the downtown area against the law. Among the 200 people in the City Council chambers were the Mayor of Atlanta and many business leaders, who backed the ordinance, and religious and human rights groups, who opposed it.
The ordinance will allow for up to 30 days in jail and $1000 fine for the third offense, whereas the old ordinance allows for jail time on the first offense.
