17 Spanish Soldiers Killed in Afghanistan
Seventeen Spanish soldiers were killed when their helicopter crashed near Herat, in western Afghanistan, the Spanish Defense Ministry and the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force said today.
The Cougar AS532 helicopter came down south of Herat at 11:30 a.m. local time, ISAF said in an e-mailed statement. Five other Spanish soldiers were injured when a second Cougar helicopter made a forced landing at the site, the NATO-led force said. The soldiers were part of ISAF, which is mandated by the United Nations to help keep the peace in Afghanistan.
