Thousands Stranded at Heathrow
Gate Gourmet, the in-flight catering firm for British Airways, fired 600 employees following an unofficial strike by them on Wednesday over the company’s restructuring plans. On Thursday baggage handlers, bus drivers, and other staff walked out in support of the catering staff and British Airways was forced to cancel all its British, European and long-haul flights in and out of the airport.
All 500 British Airways flights using Heathrow Airport were cancelled today. Since yesterday an estimated 70,000 passengers were forced to change their plans, with about 10,000 returning home last night, 4,000 being put up at hotels, and 1,000 sleeping in the airport on Thursday night.
