Intel Set to Unveil New Chip
The last time Intel inveiled a new chip (November 2000) it was a little controversial with the Pentium 4 not living up to everyone’s expectations. It has been a long time (in the chip industry) since they brought out a wholly new line of chips. That’s why the upcoming August 23rd announcements is being greatly anticipated, with the expectation that the new chip line will be based on Mobile chip technology.
The Mobile line has focused on the power usage, something the Pentium 4 did not consider, and which competititors AMD took advantage of this by introducing the Opteron (servers and workstation) line in 2003. The Opteron pushed low-power level requirements more than the clock speed (frequency of operation) that Intel had pinned its hopes on.
Many analysts believe that Intel’s new design will be based on 64-bit architecture, with Israeli designers leading the charge (since they designed and developed the Penium-M line). Also, it is possible the new chip will have two cores (processors) which will exploit Intel’s new 65-nanometer circuit width.
