UN Sets Deadline for Iran
VIENNA, Aug. 11 – The governing board of the United Nations’ International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) passed a resolution today that imposes a September deadline on Iran to again suspend its nuclear program, diplomats here said.
After two days of backroom discussions and lobbying by Britain, France, Germany and the United States, the governing board of the energy agency passed a resolution that Greg Schulte, the United States ambassador to the agency, said “shows that the international community is united in its determination that Iran move off a dangerous course that it is on.”
The diplomats described the resolution as the best compromise possible for the 35 countries that are represented on the agency’s governing board, but it could frustrate those governments that had hoped for a faster and more forceful approach.
