US Court Overturns 5 Spying Convictions
The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta ordered a new trial on Tuesday for five Cuban agents, Rene Gonzalez, Ramon Labanino, Gerardo Fernandez, Fernando Gonzalez and Antonio Guerrero. In 2001 the five men were convicted of serving as agents for a foreign government and sentenced to 15 years in prison. The men admitted to being agents, but said they were spying on terrorist exile groups opposed to Cuban President Fidel Castro, not the US Government.
The court also overturned the murder conspiracy conviction of alleged ringleader Gerardo Hernandez, who had been convicted for his role in the deaths of four Cuban exiles shot down by Cuban MiGs in international airspace in 1996.
