Democrat is in a close race with Republican for a congressional seat, replacing retired Republican Rob Portman. As of Tuesday, Schmidt was in the lead by less than 1000 votes.

If Paul Hackett, who has been known to bash President Bush, wins the seat, he will be come the first Iraq war combat veteran in Congress and the first Democrat to win the Cincinnati-area district in thirty years.
