Mubarak goes for another term
77 year old Hosni Mubarak announced that he will run for another 6 year term as Egyptian president, in the first Egyptian presidential election that will allow more than one candidate. Mubarak has been Egypt’s president for nearly 25 years and promised to scrap the emergency lawas if re-elected.
Under pressure from Washington and citizens of Egypt, he agreed to multi-candidate elections – but opposition candidates will have a difficulty without approval from the president’s National Democratic party. President George Bush has been urging him to set an example for the region by holding free and fair elections.
Mr. Mubarak’s most likely challenger so far is leader of the al-Ghad party Ayman Nour, even though he is on trial for forgery and has experienced various forms of harassment since announcing his presidential goals.
