Nanotech coming of age?
A cure? Nanotechnology finally shows evidence of its promise in fighting disease.
When Dr. James Baker teamed up with chemist Donald Tomalia in the 1990s, few expected the dramatic results that are just the first of their successes. Last June, the new hepatitis vaccine that can be administered via nasal spray (and needs no refrigeration) was announced (massive grants awarded for further development by the Gates Foundation) and a new “trojan horse” cancer treatment that turns canccer cells on themselves is also in development.
What do these have in common? They are the first practical applications of nanotechnology in fighting major diseases. The very least Baker hopes for from the cancer therapy is “If we can make the therapy nontoxic … then that’s much more practical.” (Wired News)
