Smoking While Driving
New Jersey Assemblyman John McKeon has proposed assembly bill 4306, which would allow police to issue a $250 fine for smoking while driving. This would be a secondary offense, which means that you would have to be pulled over for something else first to receive the fine. McKeon said his bill would promote safety, but did not cite any studies linking smoking to a heightened risk of car accidents.
Of course smokers are angry about it; “It’s my car. I own it. Next time, will they come into my house? What’s the difference,” said Eileen Gilchrist while taking a smoke break from her job. What may surprise you is that many non-smokers are also angry about it. On CNN news this morning one non-smoker said that it was another step in taking away our liberty, while another non-smoker said that “Land of the Brave and Home of the Free” is quickly becoming just “Land of the Brave.”
It is my opinion that eating, finding a CD to play in your car stereo, and applying cosmetics while driving (one I’ve seen numerous times), are much more distracting than holding a cigarette between two fingers.
